A glucose tolerance test (GTT), also known as an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), measures how effectively your body processes glucose (sugar) after consuming a standardized sugary drink. It is used primarily to diagnose diabetes, prediabetes, gestational diabetes, or conditions like insulin resistance after completing the reversal treatment.
Glucose Tolerance Test is of two types : 1. GTT-1 and 2. GTT-2 (OGTT).
GTT-1 is the preliminary test to find out the body’s effectiveness in processing the glucose after consuming sweets of approx. 12 tsp of sugar i.e., 6 gulab jamun or 6 jelebees or 2 plates of sheera.
GTT-1:
TAKEN AT HOME ON GLUCOMETER:
Consume 6 gulab jamun or 6 jelebees or 2 plates of Sheera (amounting to 12 tsp of sugar) in the morning on empty stomach.
Take:
- - 1st Reading after 2 hours after consuming the sweet item. – it should be <200
- - 2nd reading after 2.1/2 hours – it should be <180
- - 3rd reading after 3 hours - it should be <150
OGTT or GTT-2:
This is always done in a Lab.
- First take the Fasting reading at the Lab.
- Thereafter consume 75gms of Glucose (G75 sachet) in 100 ml water slowly over 5 to 10 minutes.
- Labs take readings after 1 hour and after 2 hours from consuming the glucose which is normal.
- Check with the Lab whether they will provide the G75 sachet. Some Labs do not keep the sachets. If they do not provide, then purchase it from a Medical store and consume it as per above directions.
- Once the G75 glucose sachet is consumed, avoid any heavy walking or exercise including house work. If it is possible, just relax at the Lab itself for 2 hours till the second reading is taken.
- Thereafter you can have your breakfast.
The GTT readings are :
| PERIOD | READING |
|---|---|
| FASTING | <110 |
| AFTER 1 HOUR | <200 |
| AFTER 2 HOURS | <180 |
| AFTER 3 HOURS | <130 |
| PERIOD | READING |
|---|---|
| FASTING | <100 |
| AFTER 1 HOUR | <200 |
| AFTER 2 HOURS | <140 |
| HbA1c | <5.7% |
Some Lab parameters may slightly differ.
NOTE:
1. 3 days before GTT, follow the dietary protocols strictly like completely avoid MRPS.
2. Attempt GTT on instructions and under guidance of your Panel Doctor.
